What I Read in a Day
Henry Gallego

What I read
in the Morning:
I begin the day by checking common news outlets on my phone. A few years ago, I subscribed to The New York Times to access some old articles for a class. Unknowingly, this also signed me up for their email listing. I find that it’s a good way of keeping up with the stuff they post.
I also tend to check my social media, specifically Twitter. I follow some news outlets, like the aforementioned New York Times, the Washington Post, and CNN. Although, I don’t just read about current events and politics. Being a film enthusiast, I also seek out the latest news on film. For this I look at sites like Deadline, Film Daze, and the Criterion Daily.
What I read
in the Afternoon
What I read in the afternoon tends to vary day to day. Sometimes I’ll continue to read news from the sites I listed previously. Other times, I’ll be reading books I’m currently interested in. Currently, I’m reding a book titled “The Films of Luis Buñuel: Subjectivity and Desire” by Peter William Evans. The book is an insightful analysis of director Luis Buñuel’s filmography and how they reflected his thoughts on cultural norms of the time. Buñuel is one of my favorite directors of all time and I always love to learn more about him.
Previously I had read “The Cinema of Wes Anderson: Brining Nostalgia to Life.” This book is part of a series by Whitney Crothers Dilley which analyzes the films of specific directors for their style, production, and historical significance. I wouldn’t say I’m a huge Wes Anderson fan but his filmography is definitely important to contemporary cinema. It was interesting learning the back story to some of his films.

What I read
at Night:
Admittedly, I don’t read much at night. Sometimes I’ll be on Twitter and read the occasional news story, but usually I’m on a site like Letterboxd. Letterboxd is a social media site where people submit reviews for films they recently saw. I think reading reviews from regular users on here provides a good perspective at how the public perceives a film. It’s also interesting to read opinions that differ from my own.
What I want
to read:
In the future, I might look into including some fiction into my reading schedule. I’ve always been interested in the work of Franz Kafka as his style of writing blends realism and fantasy together, much in the same way Buñuel does. Reading is an important part of daily life and I think the content I choose to read helps in expanding my knowledge in certain subjects.
